Science - Living Things

This week in science we have started to learn about living things and the seven life processes: movement, reproduction, sensitivity, nutrition, excretion, respiration and growth.  We have found out what each process is and have remembered them by saying MRS NERG.  The children have designed some lovely posters.

Road Safety

Today we went on a walk around part of the village and learnt about how to cross the road safely.  These are the main points that we have learnt:
- Find a safe place to cross the road where you can see both ways clearly.   Do not cross right behind a car or van.
- Stand an arm's length away from the kerb, do not stand on the kerb.
- Look both ways and listen to see if there is any traffic.
- If the road in clear, cross over and keep looking both ways.
- Don't run across the road and do not stop or go back for something you have dropped.
- When walking along the path be very careful of driveways and cars pulling on to or off their drives.

Road safety is so important and we learnt about how to be safe by roads.

Sedgeberrow in Bloom

Our topic has been 'Sedgeberrow in Bloom' and last week we went for a walk around the village.  Mrs Beasley,  who has lived in Sedgeberrow for 30 years, came with us and told us all about how the buildings have changed.  For example,  The Red House used to be the village dairy and we also found where the old school used to be.  There used to be a blacksmith where there are now houses and the street has been named, 'The Farriers' and 'Blacksmith Close'. We have learnt so much about the village on our walk.

Growing Beans

In science we have been learning so much about plants.  We can name the different parts of plants and explain what each part does.  We have investigated what the best conditions are for the germination of broad bean seeds and also what a plant needs to stay healthy.  We did a mini investigation to see whether cress seeds germinate best in the cold or warm. It has been a lot of fun!

Down on the Farm

It was a few weeks ago, but we have been so busy this is the first chance to post our photos.  On the 8th June we spent the day at Sandfield Farm and did a lot of exploring in the fields looking at all the plants and crops.  As part of our science we have been learning about growing plants.  Emma told us about the crops that she grows and what they are used for, such as making bread or feeding her cows.  It was a lovely warm day and we had lots of fun!

3-d Shapes

We had a fun time learning about 3-d shapes and we are now really good at describing them.  We can count their faces, vertices and edges accurately.  Once we knew what the shapes were like, we made them and practised describing them to each other.  We really enjoyed playing, 'I'm thinking of a shape...' in the magic bag. Everyone tried really hard to sort the 3-d shapes into groups according to their properties - this made us really think!
